They're Repeating to America What They Did with Christianity

Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying the public his designs for a gilded ballroom two times larger of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have attempted – really, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of multiple the richest Americans, almost all of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.

We went from 'the humble will receive the Earth' toward 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment within America may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly not the account of a powerful ruler emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to avoid secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, particularly for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing too.

The obvious and straightforward truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a type of radical love centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Best of Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has been great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or reject?

The nation is most protected, essentially, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by reference to what makes it special and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In all circumstances does it imply acting as if the most negative about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it signifies both meekness and faith, a combination that genuine American Christians ought to accept.
