Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
