EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
